The Field Engineer is responsible for the commissioning, optimization, and troubleshooting of professional audio, video, and lighting systems.

The Field Engineer is responsible for the commissioning, optimization, and troubleshooting of professional audio, video, and lighting systems. This role is heavily field-based and involves direct interaction with team members and clients, ensuring systems are installed, configured, and performing to specification across a variety of environments including houses of worship, performance venues, commercial venues, and more.

The Field Engineer also performs user training, and as applicable, guides the client technical team through rehearsal and first system usage. In addition to heavy engagement with the client team, this position requires extensive collaboration with project managers, system designers, programmers, prefabrication teams, and project superintendents. The ideal candidate will be capable of independently configuring and operating all equipment deployed for end-user use in live production systems. Frequent overnight and weekend travel is required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Advanced setup, operation, and troubleshooting skills across AVL systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret AV system schematics and wiring diagrams.
  • Strong written and verbal communication, including customer-facing interaction
  • Proficiency with a wide range of AV equipment such as:
  • 1. DSPs and sound system tuning (Q-SYS, Biamp, Meyer, L-Acoustics, etc.)
  • 2. Broadcast video (Ross, Blackmagic, etc.)
  • 3. Lighting consoles and protocols (GrandMA, Onyx, etc.)
  • 4. Streaming systems and presentation software (ProPresenter, Resi, etc.)
  • 5. Audio consoles (Digico, Allen & Heath etc.)
  • 6. AV testing and optimization tools
  • Strong IP networking knowledge including switch configuration and AV-over-IP deployment
  • Ability to work independently or work within a team.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Project)
  • Self-directed, dependable, well-organized, and able to work independently in the field.

Education and Experience

Five (5) years working in the audio, video and lighting field or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience required to successfully perform the essential job duties.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Designers to ensure seamless system commissioning.
  • Participate in project planning by reviewing designs pre & post contract and offering technical input.
  • Assist with configuration and debugging of systems in the prefabrication phase.
  • Final onsite troubleshooting and configuration of all audio, video, lighting, and control devices, including console routing, DSP tuning, broadcast video, network setup, control system deployment, and lighting systems.
  • Document all system configurations and changes, maintain project documentation including IP schemes, schematics, and configuration files.
  • Ensure accurate system labeling and completion of quality control checklists.
  • Perform soldering/termination of various types of AV connections from time to time as required.
  • Verify that all cabling and connection points have been tested by the installation team.
  • Perform on-site end-user training sessions and provide support during initial system use.
  • Upload finalized configuration files and documentation to the centralized project server.

Physical demands and work environment:

The employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, bend, stoop, use hands and fingers, reach, lift and push with hands and arms. The employee is frequently required to climb and balance. Work requires the ability to perform job duties on scaffolding, ladders and at various heights as well as extensive overhead motion required to install equipment. This work requires the ability to lift fifty pounds daily and be exposed to warm and cold environments. Clean driving record, background check, and drug testing required.
